The breathtaking trailer for live-action Mulan reveals Disney’s new take on a treasured classic
As The Lion King roars nearer to release, attention turns to Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan as a sublime first trailer introduces our female hero. Based on an ancient Chinese legend, the film tells the story of the titular hero, a young woman who poses as a man to take her father’s place in the Imperial army. Where Disney’s previous live-action reimaginations haven’t strayed too far from their originals, Mulan looks set to be the first departure as the 1998 original’s musical numbers and sassy dragon sidekick Mushu (voiced previously by Eddie Murphy) make way for a more dramatic, serious, and realistic approach. While some may lament the absence of what made the previous film a classic, there is no doubting the source material has the makings of an intense female-led action film. Liu Yifei is the perfect fit in the title role, showing off impressive swordsmanship as she begins her journey to becoming one of China’s greatest warriors and leading an international all-star cast includes Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and Gong Li.
